DIGNITY BAGS

PROJECT:

Nicaragua

After the Dreams to Beams fundraiser we are pleased to have now supported a total of 20 women with our Dignity Bags initiative.

"Dignity Bags" supports single mothers of disabled children who live in extreme poverty. After giving birth to disabled children the mothers are often abandoned by the father and left to survive on their own. With an unemployment rate of 99% the mothers are forced into desperate situations to provide for their child. They often end up in relationships where alcoholism and domestic abuse are common place. There is no social assistance from the government and with no job training the mothers are forced into menial jobs like washing clothes. A job like this pays a mother $1.00 for every 12 pieces of clothes washed, dried and folded.

The "Dignity Bags" program allows these mothers to increase their income by 7 times! The goal is for them to become economically
self-sufficient and end the cycle of poverty and abuse.

The "Dignity Bags" are woven at home with a custom made loom and high quality cotton. This allows the mothers to generate income and, at the same time, stay home to care for their disabled child.

The "Dignity Bags" are then sold in local stores and tourist areas as well as online.

For a donation of $250 you can sponsor one woman for the "Dignity Bags" initiative.
The donation includes:
- The skilled training required for the mothers making the bags
- The loom used to make the bags
- The cotton from which the bags are made

Please donate now and help change the world!!!
